Costa Rica appoint former US coach Sampson | World Soccer

Former coach of the United States national team, Steve Sampson, has agreed to coach Costa Rica’s national team.

Sampson will sign a $1.4 million, four-year deal that will keep him in charge of the team until the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.

Sampson, was in charge of the US national team at France ’98 but resigned after his side were eliminated after three successive defeats in the group stage.

He replaces Alexandre Guimaraes, who recently resigned after presiding over Costa Rica’s 2002 World Cup campaign, during which Costa Rica won one, drew one and lost one match and were knocked out in the group stage.
